The new enterprise developed by Community College East Gippsland at The Stables in Bairnsdale is providing opportunities for local students in both Visual Arts and Hospitality.
The first two hospitality trainees are now employed at The Stables Gallery Café. Both Kim Kearns and Laura Oberholzer enrolled at Community College East Gippsland earlier this year in the hands-on cooking elective in the General Education program. Having enjoyed this experience, they decided to complete Certificate 1 in Hospitality at the college which included an eight day work experience component at The Stables Café.
Angela Dunkley, Hospitality Co-ordinator at Community College said that Kim and Laura were selected through an interview process to start a traineeship while continuing Certificate 2 in Hospitality. “It was a difficult decision as all applicants had shown an excellent willingness to learn during their Certificate 1 training”, Angela said.
The traineeship involves paid work at the café and theory training with Vernone Armistead in Certificate 2 at Community College which starts in October. Steven Stagg, barista at The Stables Café has been training all students on the job during their work experience at The Stables. He is pleased to have the assistance of the new trainees. “It’s great to see these young people gain confidence and develop valuable work skills in on the job training” Steve said. ‘It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to build their skills to go onto bigger things in the future.”
